About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Novokuznetsk is a major industrial center in southern Siberia, driven by metallurgy and coal. Founded in 1617, it's the oldest city in Kemerovo Oblast and has reinvented itself several times — from the original Kuznetsk (Blacksmith City) to Stalinsk during Soviet industrialization, and finally to Novokuznetsk (New Kuznetsk) in the Khruschev era.

Its long history and location near the scenic southern part of the region make it a notable stop for travelers interested in Siberian industry, history, and access to the outdoors.
