About this place
Nova Iguaçu is a major urban center in the Baixada Fluminense region, forming part of the greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. Historically, it served as the administrative hub from which several other municipalities in the region were carved out during the 20th century, including Duque de Caxias, Nilópolis, and Belford Roxo.
Today, the city is deeply intertwined with the core of Rio de Janeiro, functioning largely as a polarized commuter city. Its significance is underscored by the presence of the Guandu Water Treatment Station, the largest facility of its kind in the world for continuous production, which supplies millions of residents across the metro area.
