About this place
Niterói sits just across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, offering a more relaxed pace with striking views back toward the city. Known as the Smile City, it combines a bayside urban core with a string of Atlantic-facing beaches that feel worlds apart from the metropolis. The former state capital is also a showcase for Oscar Niemeyer architecture, with several striking works punctuating the shoreline.
Beyond the skyline panoramas, Niterói rewards visitors with historic forts, a walkable ferry-linked downtown, and neighborhoods that range from lively shopping streets in Icaraí to the surf breaks and fishing-village charm of the Oceanic Region. It functions as a local hub for the eastern side of the metro area, yet maintains a distinct identity that makes it worth exploring in its own right.

Planning Tips
- Use the ferry from Praça XV — it is the most scenic way to arrive, taking 10–20 minutes depending on the boat type, and drops you steps from downtown Niterói.
- Plan ocean-beach transport in advance — if you do not have a car, check municipal bus routes at the terminal next to the ferry station; look for destination names like Piratininga, Itacoatiara, or Itaipu on the bus signs.
- Buy souvenirs at the ferry station — the tourist information cabin near the exit sells T-shirts, magnets, brochures, and maps, plus tickets for the weekend tourism bus.
- Try açaí and tropical caipirinhas — local juice bars serve the Amazonian palm fruit chilled, while beach kiosks and bars on São Francisco Beach mix caipirinhas with kiwi, passion fruit, and cashew.
