About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Nishinomiya is a sizable city of about 485,000 residents tucked comfortably between Kobe and Osaka in Hyogo Prefecture. Its location along major rail corridors makes it a convenient base for exploring the greater Kansai region while offering its own local charm.

Fans of Japanese pop culture may recognize the city as the backdrop for the Studio Ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies and the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The city fully rebuilt after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake and today blends quiet suburban neighborhoods with lively seasonal events.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Choose your train line strategically — JR, Hanshin, and Hankyu all run east–west through the city. Check which station is closest to your destination, as north–south connections are limited.
  • Respect school photography rules — Nishinomiya-Kita High School is a popular anime location, but visitors may only take photos from outside the gates.
  • Consider airport buses for arrival — Direct buses connect Kansai International and Osaka International airports to major stations like Hanshin Koshien and JR Nishinomiya at reasonable rates.
