About this place
Niš is a lively crossroads city in southern Serbia, sitting at the center of the Balkan peninsula where routes between Central Europe and the Middle East converge. With about a quarter-million residents and a strong university presence, its streets hum with energy, yet centuries of history — from Roman times onward — remain woven into the urban fabric.
The city works well as a stopover on the way to Greece or further east, but its compact core rewards a longer stay. You can explore an Ottoman-era fortress, sample some of the region's best grilled specialties and pastries, and use Niš as a base for day trips into the surrounding mountains and gorges.

Planning Tips
- Cash in dinars — shops legally require payment in the local currency, so exchange euros or dollars at the many downtown exchange offices or use cards widely accepted in larger stores.
- Parking zones — if driving, downtown parking is divided into timed zones (red zone max 1 hour, green zone max 3 hours) with a small hourly fee; pay via scratch card or SMS to avoid fines.
- Walking and local buses — the center is walkable, but since all city buses are free, hop on one to reach Niška Banja spa or farther-flung neighborhoods without hassle.
- Emergency numbers — dial 192 for police, 193 for fire, 194 for ambulance, or the European standard 112 if you need urgent assistance.
- Tap water is safe — locals are proud of the city's drinking water quality, but bottled mineral water is also widely available if you prefer it.
