About this place
Neyveli is a planned township in Cuddalore district, on the Tamil Nadu North Coast. It lies about 200 km south-west of Chennai along NH45C and NH532, making it an accessible stop on the route toward Tanjore. The town is best known as a company township, with a well-organized layout and a surprising amount of green cover for the region.
The local landscape includes an afforestation station with an artificial waterfall, a lake, and a small bird sanctuary — a quiet contrast to the surrounding plains. While Neyveli is not a major tourist hub, its calm atmosphere and transport connections make it a practical base or a convenient overnight halt for travelers moving through central Tamil Nadu.

Things to See
- Afforestation area and artificial waterfall — a green belt roughly 25 square kilometres in size surrounding the township, built around a man-made waterfall and lake about 5 km from the airstrip. The lake includes a boat house and visitor facilities.
- Seasonal birdlife at the lake — the lake attracts migratory birds and functions as a mini bird sanctuary, making it a quiet spot for birdwatching during the right months.
- Enclosed wildlife viewing — deer and fox were previously on display for the public within the afforestation zone, though this has been suspended for several years and may not currently be open.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-December to early May — this 144-day window delivers the most comfortable conditions overall, with pleasant average temperatures around 26.6°C and very low rainfall.
- Cooler months (December–February) — overnight lows around 14.7°C make this the mildest phase for walking or exploring the afforestation area.
- Avoid the pre-monsoon build-up — while the computed window extends into May, late May can see increasing warmth and humidity as the tropical wet season approaches.

Planning Tips
- Arriving by road — Neyveli is roughly 200 km south-west of Chennai via NH45C; it also sits on the Tanjore highway about 24 km from Panruti, making self-drive or bus both practical.
- Train connections — Neyveli station links to nearby Virudhachalam on the main chord line, opening up onward trains to Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and other key destinations.
- Eating and sleeping — the Main Bazaar and bus-stand area host several hotels (Krishna, Radha, Swarnabawan) and at least one solid vegetarian option, Hotel Blue Diamond.
- Check wildlife access — if you are hoping to see deer or fox, verify locally whether the public viewing area has reopened, as it has been suspended for an extended period.
