About this place
TriBeCa, short for "Triangle Below Canal Street," is a former industrial district in Lower Manhattan that has evolved from an artist community into one of New York City's most desirable upscale residential neighborhoods. Nestled along the Hudson River and bounded by Canal and Chambers Streets west of Broadway, TriBeCa retains a surprisingly quaint and historic character with cobblestone streets and loft-style buildings that set it apart from much of the rest of Manhattan.
Today, the neighborhood is home to numerous art galleries, fine restaurants, and the acclaimed Tribeca Film Festival, which was founded by Robert De Niro to help revitalize lower Manhattan after 9/11. Despite its transformation into an enclave for the affluent, TriBeCa still maintains a strong sense of community and is considered safe, comfortable, and welcoming.
Originally farmland in the 1800s, TriBeCa became a central hub for textiles and dry goods before the Washington Market Urban Renewal Project in the 1960s converted commercial buildings into apartments, offices, and schools. The population grew dramatically from 243 in 1970 to over 5,100 by 1980, rapidly evolving into the vibrant neighborhood visitors enjoy today.
