About this place
Ndola is a major mining city in the heart of Zambia's Copperbelt, just a short distance from the Democratic Republic of Congo border. For decades its economy was defined by the rise and fall of copper prices, and although the city has diversified into other minerals, its industrial character remains central to its identity.
With a population of over half a million, Ndola functions as a busy commercial and transport hub for the region. Its history also carries a unique international footnote—UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld's fatal plane crash near the city in 1961 marked a pivotal, and still debated, moment in Cold War-era peacekeeping.
