About this place
Navi Mumbai (formerly New Bombay) is a planned satellite city founded in 1971 to ease population pressure on nearby Mumbai. Located in Maharashtra, India, it has developed into a significant urban center in its own right, attracting IT and ITES industries. While only partially successful in its original goal of decongesting Mumbai, Navi Mumbai offers a comparatively less polluted environment and modern infrastructure. The city is well-connected to Mumbai and other parts of the state, making it a practical base for visitors who want to explore the greater Mumbai region while enjoying a slightly more relaxed pace.
This article also covers Panvel, a suburb of Navi Mumbai. With a population of around 2.6 million, the city presents a blend of residential neighborhoods, commercial hubs, and emerging business districts. Its planned layout includes distinct nodes such as Vashi, Nerul, CBD Belapur, and Kharghar, each with its own character and amenities.
