About this place

Nara offers a serene and deeply historic escape from the bustle of nearby Kyoto and Osaka. As Japan’s capital from 710 to 784, the city flourished under Buddhist influence, amassing a remarkable collection of cultural treasures. Today, eight sites form the UNESCO World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" — including ancient temples, a Shinto shrine, and a primeval forest — preserving the majesty of the old capital.

The heart of the city is Nara Park, a sprawling green space where many of the major sights are located alongside hundreds of freely roaming deer. Beyond the park, the preserved merchant district of Naramachi offers a quieter glimpse into the city’s Edo-period past. With more buildings designated National Treasures than anywhere else in Japan, Nara is an essential destination for lovers of history and culture.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Feed the deer in Nara Park — Purchase shika-senbei crackers (¥200) to feed the sacred deer, but be prepared for their enthusiastic and single-minded pursuit of a snack.
  • Join a walking tour — Follow the classic 6-km loop from Kintetsu Nara Station through the park's major temples and shrine for a pleasant and comprehensive day of sightseeing.
  • Hunt for local crafts in Naramachi — Browse the specialist shops on Sanjō-dōri for fine narafude calligraphy brushes and explore Mochiidono Shopping Street for Nara sarashi cotton fabrics.
  • Taste a local specialty — Sample kaki-no-ha zushi (mackerel or salmon sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves) or seek out Miwa sōmen wheat noodles, a dish with a history as old as Nara.
  • Sip locally brewed sake — Try Harushika brand sake, produced by one of Japan's oldest breweries, or enjoy a cup of healthy, locally-grown Yamato-cha green tea.

  • Tōdai-ji Temple — The iconic centerpiece of Nara Park, this temple houses a giant bronze statue of the Buddha and is one of the most significant historic monuments in the UNESCO designation.
  • Kasuga Taisha Shrine — Famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns, this Shinto shrine is the origin of the legend that the park's deer are sacred envoys of the gods.
  • Nara National Museum — An excellent place to view Buddhist art and artifacts, this museum is especially busy in early November when the Shosoin treasures are on rare public display.
  • Heijō Palace Site — Explore the reconstructed former imperial palace grounds that once served as the center of power when Nara was Japan's capital in the 8th century.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Choose your train station strategically — Kintetsu Nara Station is a much shorter walk to Nara Park and the main sights than the JR Nara Station.
  • Unlimited bus travel on a budget — A one-day Nara Bus Pass costs ¥500 for adults and covers major attractions, including outlying temples like Yakushi-ji and Hōryū-ji.
  • Book early for autumn and holidays — Secure your accommodation months in advance for early November, August, and the New Year period, as cheaper options sell out quickly.
  • Prepare for deer encounters — Keep shika-senbei crackers hidden in a bag to avoid being mobbed, and supervise small children closely during feeding.
  • Consider a regional pass — If traveling between Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, the Kansai Thru-Pass offers unlimited travel on private railways, buses, and subways, but excludes JR trains.
