About this place
Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province and serves as the region's cultural, economic, and scientific hub. The city is divided by the Gan River: the old, historic city lies on the eastern bank, while the newer, modern Honggutan district sits to the west. The contrast between longstanding traditions and rapid modern development is visible throughout the city.
Nanchang is known as the "Heroes' City" for its role in the 1 August 1927 communist uprising, a legacy commemorated in public squares and monuments. Visitors can explore a city where historic character meets contemporary growth, with local markets, parks, and riverfront walks offering a taste of daily life.

Things to Do
- Walk along the west bank of the Gan River on a weekend and join locals flying kites — a popular and inexpensive pastime.

- Buy or rent a bicycle on Beijing Lu (about 200 m from Bayi Square) and explore the city on two wheels.
- Hike through the Meiling mountains west of the city; the small town of Wanli is a gateway to hiking and biking routes.

- Try paintball or laser tag, including the laser tag venue beneath the Star of Nanchang Ferris wheel.

Planning Tips
- When arriving by air, take the airport bus (¥15–20) instead of a taxi (¥80–100) to save money. If taking a taxi, tell the driver "da biao" (meter) to ensure a fair fare.
- High-speed trains connect Nanchang to Shanghai and other major cities, but the train station is a long taxi ride from the city center.
- The metro system has four lines as of 2023, with extensions under construction — a convenient way to navigate the city.
- Shared bicycles and electric scooters are available for short trips, but parking must follow regulations, and helmets are required by law.
