About this place
Nakano is a residential ward that sits directly west of Shinjuku, forming the near edge of Tokyo’s vast western sprawl. Often called Nakano city in English, it blends everyday Tokyo life with a compact, easily navigated commercial core just north of its main train station.
Visitors are drawn here primarily for the Nakano Sunmall shopping arcade and the Nakano Broadway complex, a well-known destination for anime, manga, and collectible subculture. The area’s excellent rail connections make it an easy and affordable base for exploring central Tokyo while offering a more local, laid-back atmosphere after dark.

Best Time to Visit
- Late spring (May–June) — Comfortable temperatures and lower humidity make walking the Nakano Sunmall and exploring side streets a pleasure, outside the peak summer crowds.
- Early-to-mid summer (July–August) — The warmest and most energetic season, ideal for experiencing Tokyo’s lively summer festivals and indoor shopping in air-conditioned Nakano Broadway.
- Autumn (October–November) — Milder weather and clearer skies return; a good window for combining Nakano with wider Tokyo sightseeing without the intensity of summer heat.

Planning Tips
- Watch the rapid train type — Only JR Chuo rapid (orange), commuter rapid (purple), and Ome special rapid (green) services stop at Nakano. Special rapid, commuter special rapid, and Chuo/Ome liner trains pass through.
- Navigate the station exits — Nakano’s main shopping and dining streets, including the Sunmall and Broadway, sit just north of the station. Use the north exit to save time.
- Use Nakano Sakaue for flexibility — Tokyo Metro Marunouchi line and Toei Oedo line both serve Nakano Sakaue, providing alternative routes to Shinjuku and beyond if JR Chuo services are crowded.
