About this place
Najaf is a deeply significant city in southern Iraq, formed by the historic merger of Najaf and Kufa. It stands as one of the world's most important centers for Shi'a Islam, drawing pilgrims who consider it the third holiest Islamic site. The city is dominated by the magnificent Imam Ali Mosque, the burial place of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib.
While the vast majority of visitors come as part of organized religious tours, independent travel is now possible. Beyond its profound spiritual heart, you'll find a lively atmosphere, traditional souvenirs, and a network of ancient desert inns, or khans, in the surrounding countryside.

Planning Tips
- Ridesharing is reliable — Use the Careem app to get around; it accepts international credit cards. Select the 'Careem Old City' service if your destination is near the shrine to bypass security roadblocks.
- Currency exchange — Independent street-side money changers often provide better rates than official desks and commonly sell local SIM cards, making them a convenient first stop.
- Souvenir shopping — Look for traditional religious items like tasbih (prayer beads), turbah (prayer clay), or aqeeq (gemstone) rings in the shops frequented by pilgrims.
- Be prepared for security — Navigating the city, especially near holy sites, involves passing through numerous highly effective military and police checkpoints. Carry ID and allow extra time.
