About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Naivasha is a lakeside town in Kenya's Rift Valley, about 90 km northwest of Nairobi. The freshwater Lake Naivasha, perched at 1,890 m, anchors the area and draws weekend visitors from the capital looking for nature and a slower pace.

The main draws are the lake itself — especially boat trips to spot hippos and birds — and Hell's Gate National Park, where you can bike or walk among zebra, gazelles, and warthogs. Many lodges and camps dot the shoreline, and fresh tilapia from the lake is a local staple.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Boat ride on Lake Naivasha — glide across the water to see birds and hippos. Early morning, roughly 7–9 AM, is often the best window for catching hippos basking before they submerge.
  • Bike or hike in Hell's Gate National Park — cycle past zebra, gazelle, and warthogs, or tackle a half-day hike for more wildlife viewing. The gorge is currently closed, but the open trails remain rewarding.
  • Relax at Mvuke Geothermal Spa — wrap up an active day at this sulphur-fed hot spring inside the national park. Aim to arrive before the 6 PM closing time.
  • Dine on fresh lake fish — sample tilapia and mudfish from Lake Naivasha, available at lodges and local eateries.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Getting there — matatus run frequently from Nairobi (about 1½ hours). The older metre-gauge railway also serves central Naivasha three times per week; the new SGR stops 35 km away at Suswa, better for nearby parks than the town itself.
  • Local transport — matatus along Moi South Lake Road reach Kongoni in about an hour and can drop you at Hell's Gate National Park.
  • Eating and drinking — most lodges have a restaurant and bar. For cheaper meals and drinks, walk to the cafes and bars in nearby villages.
