About this place
Nairobi is the political, financial, and media capital of Kenya, home to about 4.8 million people (as of 2024) and one of Africa's fastest-growing major cities. Situated on the Nairobi River at an elevation of 1,795 meters (5,889 feet), it ranks among the highest national capitals in the world. This altitude gives the city a pleasantly mild climate that surprises many first-time visitors.
Founded in 1899 as a railway camp for the Uganda Railway, Nairobi quickly grew into the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate by 1905, eventually replacing Mombasa and Machakos as the administrative center. Today, its diverse population includes Kenyan citizens of African, British-descended, and South Asian heritage—the latter tracing back to laborers and merchants from the colonial railway era.
For travelers, Nairobi is the primary gateway to Kenya's famous safari circuit, but the city itself offers a dynamic urban experience. Known as the "safari capital of Africa," it is surrounded by plains, cliffs, and forest that make up Nairobi National Park—a unique wildlife reserve right on the city's doorstep. While many visitors pass through en route to other destinations, the city rewards those who stay a few days with its museums, restaurants, shopping, and cultural diversity.

Planning Tips
- Use ride-hailing apps — Uber, Bolt, and Little are widely available in Nairobi and offer a safer, more predictable alternative to hailing taxis on the street.
- Carry cash in small denominations — Most transactions are cash-only, and many smaller businesses have limited change. ATMs are common in shopping areas and at the airport.
- Pre-book SGR train tickets — The popular Madaraka Express between Nairobi and Mombasa can sell out, so buy tickets a few days ahead.
- Vaccinations and health — Consult a travel clinic 6 weeks before your trip for recommended vaccines (yellow fever is required). Drink only bottled or boiled water.
- Stay aware of your surroundings — Avoid displaying valuables, especially in busy areas like River Road and matatu terminals. Do not walk alone at night; always take a taxi or ride-hail.
- Visit the Maasai Market — It rotates locations daily; check the schedule (Tuesday–Sunday) and plan your shopping accordingly. Bargain confidently.
