About this place
Hooghly, pronounced HOOG-lee, is a historic former Portuguese colony along the Hooghly River in West Bengal. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest European settlements in Bengal, with roots tracing back to a 1536 trading permit granted by the Bengali Sultan. By choosing this location to establish Fort Ugulim in 1579, Portuguese traders transformed Hooghly into a major commercial center and the largest port in Bengal by the early 17th century.
Political shifts saw the Portuguese expelled in 1629, and the region's commercial significance later waned. In 1690, the British made a strategic decision to relocate their trading hub downstream to the emerging city of Calcutta. This shift caused trade and commerce to move away from Hooghly, leaving it as a quieter place rich in colonial history.
