About this place
Nagoya (名古屋) is the capital and largest city of Aichi prefecture, in the Chubu region of Honshu, Japan. It is the country's fourth-largest city and a major economic center, home to automotive giants Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors. While many travelers pass through on the bullet train between Tokyo and Kyoto, those who linger will find a city with a rich history, a restored castle, ancient shrines, and a surprisingly lively nightlife.
Nagoya's modern identity was forged in the post-war era when wide, car-friendly boulevards were built over the rubble of World War II. The city's prosperity is underpinned by a manufacturing heritage that began with looms and evolved into a global automobile industry. Today, it hosts the headquarters of numerous major corporations and a thriving community of international residents.
The city's focal points are Nagoya Station to the north, Sakae to the east, and Kanayama to the south. Divided into 16 wards (ku), Nagoya offers a blend of modern commerce, historic sites, and distinctive local culture, including a unique food scene centered on red miso.
