About this place
Nagano, the capital of Nagano Prefecture in Japan's Chubu region, is a city where deep spiritual history meets outdoor adventure. It flourished as a temple town centered on the revered Zenkō-ji and gained global recognition as the host of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Today, it serves as a gateway to the hot springs and ski resorts of the Japanese Alps, while still retaining a walkable, welcoming urban core. The city's compact center and excellent transport connections make it an ideal base for experiencing both culture and nature.

Planning Tips
- Book Shinkansen tickets wisely — The fastest Kagayaki and Hakutaka services make fewer stops than the Asama. A Japan Rail Pass fully covers Standard and Green Cars, but not the premium GranClass surcharges.
- Consider the highway bus — Buses from Tokyo's Shinjuku or Ikebukuro take about 3.5 hours and cost ¥4000 one-way, roughly half the price of the Shinkansen.
- Know your rail pass coverage — If using the JR Kanto Area Pass, note it only covers travel as far as Saku-daira; you'll need a separate ticket (¥3,330 for a reserved seat) for the final leg to Nagano.
- Sample local specialties — Don't leave without trying Togakushi soba noodles and Oyaki, a cheap and delicious Japanese dumpling with various sweet and savory fillings.
