About this place
Danzhou is a sprawling prefecture-level city in northwestern Hainan, centered around its administrative hub of Nada. With a population approaching a million across 17 towns, it offers a look at everyday island life beyond the tourist hubs of Haikou and Sanya. Nada itself is the third-largest urban center on Hainan, while the Yangpu Economic Development Zone and the nearby town of Baimajing form a secondary, interconnected urban area across the Yangpu Peninsula. While not a classic resort destination, Danzhou serves as a gateway to a less-traveled side of the island.

Planning Tips
- Plan your arrival — since the airport is not yet built, you will need to fly into Haikou or Sanya and take a bus or high-speed train to Danzhou's stations at Yintan or Baimajing.
- Urban transport is easy — buses run frequently between the main centers of Nada and the Yangpu/Baimajing conurbation. In smaller towns, be prepared to walk or negotiate a fare with a motorized pedicab.
- Language basics help — while many younger locals speak Mandarin, the area has its own distinct Danzhou dialect. Having your destination written in Chinese can be useful.
