About this place
Mytilene, the capital and main port of Lesvos, is an ancient city with roots reaching back to the 10th century BC. Originally an islet separated from the larger island by the Euripus channel, the old town and its medieval castle now sit on land that was once offshore — the channel was filled in long ago, joining the two parts. Today’s compact city of about 30,000 residents spreads across flat ground near the harbour and climbs the western hillside toward the ancient theatre.
The city’s dual harbours shape its character: the south harbour is the working port with ferries, a marina, and a nearly circular inner waterfront lined by P. Kountouriotou street, while the quieter north harbour is edged with tavernas. Walking is the best way to absorb the layered architecture — Byzantine and Ottoman remnants sit alongside neoclassical buildings — and the central Agora market keeps daily life buzzing.
