About this place
Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Kashmir, sits at the confluence of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers at an elevation of 737 meters. With roots tracing back to 1646 and Sultan Muzaffar Khan’s red fort, the city blends river-valley scenery and Kashmiri culture with a still-visible recovery from the devastating 2005 earthquake.
It serves as a gateway to the Neelum Valley and nearby mountain trails, making it a relaxed base for trekking, day hikes, and riverside meals. The city’s bazaars, Kashmiri tea houses, and surrounding foothills give travelers a mix of local flavor and outdoor access without the crowds of Pakistan’s larger hill stations.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-August to early November — the most comfortable window; average temperatures around 22.1°C, low rainfall, plentiful sunshine, and low cloud cover make it ideal for outdoor activities.
- Autumn (October–November) — cooler, crisp days and golden landscapes arrive after the summer rains taper off; excellent for trekking and photography.
- Late spring (April–May) — warming weather and blooming hillsides offer a second shoulder season, though afternoon temperatures can rise quickly.
- Avoid mid-winter — December–February brings cold nights, possible snow on higher trails, and less predictable road conditions in the mountains.

Planning Tips
- Drive during daylight — the winding Murree–Kohala road is most safely navigated in daytime, especially for first-time visitors.
- Expect a checkpoint at Kohala Bridge — entry into Azad Kashmir requires clearance; keep identification and patience handy.
- Eat what’s freshly cooked — asking for dishes prepared to order, such as chicken karahi, is a reliable strategy at local restaurants.
- Drink bottled water — stick to sealed mineral water (sold in half-, one-, and three-liter bottles) and avoid tap water.
- Book accommodation ahead for peak windows — guesthouses and rest houses can be reserved in advance through offices in Muzaffarabad.
