About this place
Murmansk is the world’s largest city north of the Arctic Circle, perched on the Kola Bay near the Barents Sea. With roughly 270,000 residents, it serves as a vital Russian naval base and a commercial port that, unlike Arkhangelsk, remains ice-free year-round. Its short summer and deep winter give the city a rugged, frontier character.
History draws many visitors: Murmansk was the last city founded by the Russian Empire and played a key role in the World War II Arctic convoys before becoming the Soviet Union’s premier submarine base. The city’s museums and port tell this story, while the surrounding treeless hills reveal just how far north you really are.

Things to Do
- Ferry across the Kola Fjord — a popular and pleasant way to see the city from the water.
- Walk the central corridor — start at the Poliarnie Zori Hotel and follow the main north-south avenue past Five Corners Square all the way to the Alyosha statue.
- Hike the nearby hills — short walks up from the center reward you with sweeping views of the bay, lakes, and the barren tundra-like surroundings.

Things to See
- Alyosha Statue — the giant soldier monument stands on a plateau at the north end of the city, one of Murmansk’s few iconic landmarks.
- Stalinist architecture downtown — crumbling but intriguing mid-century buildings, softened by untended trees and greenery.
- City museums — modest by big-city Russian standards but worthwhile for their window into regional history and art.
- Kola Bay panoramas — climb into the hills for dramatic views over the port, the bay, and the completely bare mountains beyond.

Planning Tips
- Arrive by train — the Arktika branded service from Moscow (35–40 hours) or Saint Petersburg (27–30 hours) is the most comfortable overland option.
- Border crossings by road — driving from Norway or Finland can involve hour-long border waits; factor in the time-zone difference when planning.
- Cross-border buses — daily service runs from Kirkenes, Norway, and a weekly bus from Ivalo, Finland; book ahead and arrive early.
- Getting around locally — trolleybuses run north-south, but for east-west routes you’ll need a marshrutka minibus; both can be delayed by rush-hour traffic.
- Safety after dark — exercise caution in the Rostu and Zhilstroy neighborhoods at night; also watch for stray dogs in suburban areas and occasional bears on the airport road.
