About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Multan, often called the City of Saints, is the sixth largest city in Pakistan and one of the oldest in the Asian subcontinent. Located in southern Punjab province at almost the exact center of the country, it sits on a fertile alluvial plain ideal for agriculture — particularly citrus and mango farms. Its history stretches back to Hindu legends of the Mahabharata and includes visits from Alexander the Great's army, conquest by Muhammad bin Qasim, and British rule until Pakistan's independence in 1947.

Today, Multan is a city of contrasts. The old city retains a dilapidated charm with centuries-old tombs and monuments bearing the scars of warfare, while new industrial growth and a population boom bring modern energy. Visitors come for the rich Sufi heritage, iconic blue pottery, and the legendary mangoes that earn it the nickname city of mangoes. The local culture is steeped in Saraiki traditions, though Urdu and English are also widely understood. Dust storms and extreme summer heat are part of the experience, but the city's warmth — both in climate and hospitality — leaves a lasting impression.

Things to See

  • Shrines and tombs: The city's highlight — don't miss the tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam on the old city hillock, and Bahauddin Zakaria's mausoleum (South Punjab's largest university is named after him). Other notable sites include the shrines of Shah Shams Sabzwari, Shah Ali Akbar, and Bibi Pak Daman.
  • Eidgah: A 268-year-old historic prayer ground with a bulbous dome — the only such dome in southern Punjab. Built in 1735, it's a unique architectural landmark.
  • Yadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs Memorial): A landscaped garden in the Cantonment area that commemorates recipients of Pakistan's Nishan-e-Haider award. A pleasant spot for a quiet stroll.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Getting around: Rickshaws and tuktuks are the most efficient way to navigate the city. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem also operate in Multan.
  • Shopping: Head to Hussain Agahi market for textiles, spices, pottery, and Multani halwa — but haggle aggressively as prices are inflated for tourists.
  • Stay hydrated: Carry bottled water at all times, especially in summer. Try the local falsa cola (red currant cola) and Goli Wali Bottle (soft drink with a marble in the bottle) for a unique refreshment.
  • Dress respectfully: When visiting shrines, remove your shoes before entering. Modest clothing is appreciated in this conservative city.
  • Mango season: If you visit during the stiflingly hot summer, the local mangoes (especially Chonsa, Sindhri, and Langra) are worth the heat — plan a stop at a fruit market.
