About this place
Münsterland is a predominantly flat, agricultural region in North Rhine-Westphalia, celebrated for its more than 100 castles and manors, earning it the nickname "Land of a Hundred Castles." It is also one of Germany's foremost centers for horse breeding and equestrian sport. The area was historically ruled by prince-bishops, contributing to its character as one of the most Catholic and politically conservative regions in Northern Germany.
The region’s biggest urban hub, Münster, is a lively university city and Germany's bicycle capital, known for its rebuilt historic core with notable baroque and medieval landmarks. The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of fields, meadows, and quiet roads, making it exceptionally suited for relaxed exploration by bike.

Things to Do
- Cycling the 100-Schlösser-Route — The 305-km route is divided into four sections and is the classic way to experience the region's castle-dotted landscape on well-paved, signposted paths. Bike rentals and repair shops are widely available, and you can take your bike on many regional buses and trains if you get tired.
- Horse riding and equestrian experiences — Over 10,000 horses live on 1,000 farms in the region. Many farms offer rides along recommended bridle paths, riding lessons for beginners, and chances to watch shows and competitions at equestrian sport events.
- Canoeing on regional rivers — Paddle the quiet waterways that run through the Münsterland countryside, offering a different perspective on its meadows and light forests.
- Hiking — Beyond cycling, the flat to gently rolling terrain invites leisurely walks through the landscape, with routes connecting towns, castles, and natural areas.
- Golfing — About a dozen golf clubs across the region provide opportunities for a relaxed round in a pastoral setting.

Planning Tips
- Bring or rent a bike — The region is best explored on two wheels. Rentals are plentiful, and most routes are suitable for beginners. Check bus bike policies if you plan to mix transport modes.
- Book accommodations in advance for summer weekends — Popular castle towns and Münster itself can fill up during peak season, especially when equestrian events are on.
- Study regional bus schedules — If relying on public transport outside major towns, note that service thins considerably on weekends and virtually vanishes in remote hamlets. The BUBIM app is useful for tickets.
- Pack for variable weather — Even in the favorable May–September window, cloudy skies are common and rain is possible. A light rain jacket is advisable for cyclists and walkers.
- Check pharmacy rotations for medical needs — If you anticipate needing a pharmacy outside standard hours, plan ahead by checking the rotating night-duty schedule.
