About this place
Mülheim an der Ruhr is a green, mid-sized city nestled in the heart of the Ruhr area, where more than half of the city is covered by forests and greenery. Once defined by coal and leather, it has reinvented itself as a diversified economic center between Düsseldorf and the rest of the Ruhr region. The city is home to two Max Planck Institutes and a technical college, giving it a quiet, research-oriented energy alongside its industrial heritage.
With no active coal mines remaining, Mülheim offers a distinctly open and leafy urban experience. Its compact center and surrounding districts make it a calm base for exploring the wider Ruhr metropolis, while local bus and tram connections link it seamlessly to neighbors like Essen, Duisburg, and Oberhausen.
