About this place
Mueang Nonthaburi is a large city just north of Bangkok, forming a seamless part of the capital's metropolitan area. It straddles the Chao Phraya River and functions as a major suburban hub, making it an accessible base for exploring both Nonthaburi province and the northern reaches of Bangkok.
Its history stretches back to the Ayutthaya period, with a 16th-century founding and later strategic importance that led to the construction of riverside fortifications. Today it blends a local, lived-in atmosphere with easy transport links, including the MRT Purple Line, river boats, and numerous bus routes.

Things to See
- Wat Khemaphirataram Rajaworawiharn — an Ayutthaya-era monastery on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. Its large pagoda houses Buddha relics and a centuries-old icon, with additional historic structures like the Tamnak Daeng Building and Phra Thinang Monthian Hall in the compound.
- Ko Kret — a man-made island in the Chao Phraya River, easily reached from central Bangkok. Known for its pottery-making Mon community and a relaxed, car-free atmosphere, it makes for a popular day trip north of the city center.

Best Time to Visit
- November to early April — this period offers the most pleasant weather, with lower rainfall, moderate cloud cover, and warm but manageable temperatures.
- Dry-season weekdays — visiting Ko Kret and riverside temples on weekdays avoids the spike in local weekend visitors.
- Early morning boat rides — the Chao Phraya express boats are cooler and less crowded before mid-morning, making the journey from Bangkok more comfortable.

Planning Tips
- Use the orange flag boat — it runs daily from 06:00 to 19:00, costs 14 baht from Sathorn pier to Nonthaburi pier, and takes about one hour.
- MRT Purple Line fares — tickets range from 16 to 42 baht based on distance. Machines accept coins and banknotes, and children or the elderly can request half-price tickets at the counter.
- Bring small bills for boats — express boat conductors collect fares onboard with a metal ticket dispenser; having exact change speeds up the process.
- Avoid walking long distances — plan to use buses, the MRT, or taxis between sights, as the road network prioritizes vehicles over pedestrians.
