About this place
Muar, also known as Bandar Maharani (Empress Town), is the second-largest town in Johor and serves as the state's de jure royal capital. Sitting at the mouth of the Muar River on the Straits of Malacca, this flat, mid-sized town is steeped in history — from its role in the Malacca Sultanate to its rich multicultural present.
The town is a celebrated food haven, famed for dishes like mee bandung, asam pedas, otak-otak, and satay Muar. Beyond the table, visitors can enjoy leisurely riverside strolls, river cruising, and explorations of historic temples, tombs, and colonial-era shophouses. Its flat terrain also makes it perfect for laid-back bicycle exploration.
