About this place

Last updated Jun 12, 2026

Mosul is Iraq's second-largest city and a historic economic hub in the country's northwest. Straddling the Tigris River, its roots stretch back to at least 6,000 BC, while the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh—once the world's largest—lies on the eastern bank. For centuries, Mosul thrived as a crossroads of civilizations, reflected in its remarkably diverse religious and cultural makeup.

The city endured severe destruction during the battle against ISIS in 2017, which left large parts of the old city in ruins. Today, Mosul is a place of ongoing recovery, where residents are slowly rebuilding homes, mosques, churches, and marketplaces. Travelers here witness a living history—layered, resilient, and in the midst of renewal.

Things to See

Last updated Jun 12, 2026
  • Visit the sprawling ruins of ancient Nineveh just across the Tigris, once the world's largest city and capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, where remains of massive 700 BC walls and city outlines are still visible.
  • Explore Mosul's historic mosques and shrines, a treasure trove of Islamic religious architecture spanning hundreds of years—though many structures are damaged or under repair following years of conflict.
  • Seek out the ancient Assyrian churches hidden throughout the city; many date back to early centuries of Christianity, with their entrances often concealed in thick walls, though significant wartime damage remains evident.
  • Wander through the revived traditional markets where a mix of cultures—Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, Turcoman, Yazidi, and others—once again jostle among the stalls, offering glimpses into everyday Maslawi life.
  • Take a day trip south to Nimrud, a 3,000-year-old Assyrian archaeological site on the Tigris riverbank; though badly damaged in 2015, its history and connection to ancient palaces remain profoundly significant.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 12, 2026
  • Plan entry via Erbil International Airport in the Kurdistan Region, located about 75 km east, since Mosul's own airport remains closed as of 2023.
  • Hire a private car or arrange a dedicated driver for safety and ease while moving around the city and between eastern and western banks of the Tigris.
  • Shared taxis from Erbil (roughly 2–3 hours) or Baghdad (4–5 hours) are common overland routes; be prepared for shared vehicles to fill up before departure.
  • Manage accommodation expectations: only smaller local hotels are operating, and landmark properties like the Nineveh International Hotel were completely destroyed and have not been rebuilt.
  • Learn a few basic Arabic phrases if you plan to use minibuses or local taxis, as English may not be widely spoken by drivers.
  • Check current local conditions before visiting specific archaeological sites like Nineveh or Nimrud, which have suffered from vandalism, looting, and exposure to the elements in recent years.
  • Respect that alcohol is not widely available; a small number of bars have opened since 2017, but options remain very limited.
