About this place
Moshi sits in northeastern Tanzania at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, serving as the primary gateway for climbers and safari-goers heading into the northern parks. The city blends Chagga, Maasai, and Pare cultural influences and offers a lively, walkable downtown with markets, places of worship, and a sprinkling of historical sites. Most visitors use Moshi as a launchpad for Africa's highest peak, but the town itself rewards a few days of slower exploration — from chaotic bus-station scenes to relaxed afternoons by a pool.

Things to Do
- Climb Mount Kilimanjaro — the main reason travelers come to Moshi. Multi-day treks can be arranged through local operators; ask other travelers for recommendations and negotiate prices reasonably.
- Go on safari — Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, and Arusha National Park are within reach. Book through an office, not street touts, and remember that tips make up most of your guide's income.
- Take a walking tour through the rice paddies — an inexpensive way to explore the countryside and spot monkeys in the local forest, usually arranged with a single guide.
- Visit Marangu Waterfalls — a popular day trip where you can stand under the cascade, jump from the rocks, and swim. Combine it with visits to Lake Nyumba ya Mungu for fishing culture and plantations.
- Join the Social Reality Tour — a three-hour walk with a social worker through underserved neighborhoods, meeting people affected by HIV/AIDS. The US$10 fee supports a home-based care program.

Things to See
- Downtown market — a maze of narrow alleyways selling fruit, vegetables, meat, dried fish, fabrics, and the cheapest souvenirs in town. Worth visiting even without buying.
- Commonwealth War Cemetery — a quiet, well-kept site opposite the Magistrate's Court, offering a reflective stop in the city center.
- Former German administration office — located on Mawenzi Road, this colonial-era building still has the metal pillar once used for hangings.
- Shantytown, Majengo, and Soweto — outlying neighborhoods that show different sides of Moshi life, from relatively affluent areas to communities with more modest means.
- Bus station chaos — even if you are not catching a bus, the frenetic energy of the station is a spectacle, and a short ride on a daladala minibus is an adventure in itself.

Best Time to Visit
- December through mid-March — the longest dry window with comfortable temperatures, low rainfall, and ample sunshine. Ideal for Kilimanjaro climbs and safaris.
- June to October — a secondary dry season that also works well for trekking and wildlife viewing, though it is cooler and shorter than the December–March stretch.
- Avoid heavy rain periods — the long rains typically fall from March to May, turning unpaved tracks muddy and complicating transport to trailheads and rural areas.

Planning Tips
- Visa requirements — obtain a Tanzanian visa in advance from an embassy or consulate, or get one on arrival at the airport or border crossing.
- Choose buses carefully — stick to reputable companies like Dar Express or Kilimanjaro bus lines. Cheaper operators may have poor safety standards and unreliable drivers.
- Negotiate everything — taxi fares, safari packages, and even bus tickets are open to bargaining. Agree on a price before getting into a vehicle.
- Carry cash — US dollar traveler's checks are difficult to exchange in Moshi. Bring US cash and use local ATMs that accept MasterCard or Visa for Tanzanian shillings.
- Dress respectfully — women who cover their legs to the knee tend to receive more respect, as local women rarely show their legs in public.
