About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Iwate Prefecture, in northeastern Tohoku, is a land of rugged mountains, remote coastlines, and deep history. From the former northern capital of Hiraizumi to the noodle fame of Morioka, the region rewards travelers who venture beyond Japan's main tourist trail. Its low population density means wide-open spaces, outdoor adventure, and a strong sense of local tradition.

Much of life clusters in the fertile valley between the Ōu and Kitakami ranges, while the Pacific coast is dramatic and rocky. The prefecture is known for skiing, hiking, hot springs, and cave exploration, with Towada-Hachimantai National Park covering its northwestern corner.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Fly to Tokyo then take the train — Hanamaki Airport has limited domestic flights (none to Tokyo); the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo is often more practical.
  • Rent a car for flexibility — sparse train lines and limited bus schedules make driving the best way to explore remote areas.
  • Check JR pass coverage — the Iwate Galaxy Railway north of Morioka is privately operated and not included in JR passes.
  • Coastal awareness — the Sanriku Railway serves the Pacific coast towns; note that many were rebuilt after the 2011 tsunami.
