About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Mogadishu (Somali: Muqdisho) is the capital and largest city of Somalia, with a population of over 2.5 million. Its history stretches back over 4,000 years, from early settlements through the medieval Mogadishu Sultanate, a period when it was celebrated by travelers like Ibn Battuta as an exceedingly wealthy city of merchants and fine fabrics. Colonial Italian rule from the late 1800s left a unique architectural blend: Somali coral-white houses and Arab quarters alongside Italian-fascist planned suburbs and boulevards, plus a café culture that made Mogadishu known as the "Switzerland of Africa" for a time after independence in 1960.

Decades of civil war starting in the 1990s devastated much of the city's historic architecture and infrastructure. However, a construction boom is underway, with over 20 foreign embassies having reopened and foreign investment increasing. While tourism infrastructure remains minimal and security is a serious concern, Mogadishu is slowly rebuilding. For the most resilient travelers, the city reveals a wealth of historical and cultural sights set within a bustling, war-weary metropolis that is beginning to define its own future.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Security is paramount: Hire armed guards and use armored vehicles for any travel within the city. Ensure your hotel has 24/7 armed security.
  • Fly into Mogadishu International Airport; airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian, Qatar Airways, and others offer services from regional hubs.
  • Do not drink tap water; water and food safety are questionable. Consult other foreigners recently in the city for advice.
  • Alcoholic beverages are culturally and socially taboo — Somalia is an overwhelmingly Muslim country.
  • Health services are extremely limited; carry a comprehensive medical kit and travel insurance that covers evacuation.
