About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Mirpur Khas is a historic city in Sindh whose name translates to "land of most royal Mirs." Once the capital of the Talpur Mirs and a gateway to the Thar Desert, it is now one of Sindh's larger urban centers. The city played a notable role after the 1947 partition, serving as a key railway junction and the first major destination for refugees arriving from across the border.

For leisure travelers, the city’s sightseeing menu is deliberately short. The primary draw is the ancestral graves of the Talpur Mirs on the outskirts of town. A nearby archaeological site can also be visited, though most visitors use Mirpur Khas as a practical stopover rather than a multi-day destination.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Talpur Mirs ancestral graves — the city’s headline sight, set on the outskirts. The tombs mark the final resting place of the Talpur rulers who governed the region before British annexation.
  • Archaeological site — a second out-of-town destination accessible by a hired rickshaw. Details on its period and scale are thin, so keep expectations modest.
  • Thar Desert rail journey — the Marvi Passenger train runs from Mirpur Khas to the border town of Khokhropar, cutting through the classic desert scenery of the Thar.

  • Late January through early April — the high-comfort desert window. Daytime averages settle near 23.1°C with abundant sunshine and virtually no rain, making it the ideal stretch for walking around and taking a rickshaw to the outskirts.
  • Late autumn (November–December) — temperatures mellow after the long summer, though the official travel window points to the January–April period as the sweet spot for comfort.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting there — air-conditioned buses and vans connect Mirpur Khas with Karachi (about 3 hours) and other cities in Sindh; the non-AC Saman Sarkar Express links it with Hyderabad.
  • Local transport — use motorcycle rickshaws or conventional rickshaws for cheap trips around town. Taxis are trickier to flag on the street; arrange one through your hotel if you want a cooler, more comfortable ride in summer.
  • Budgeting for out-of-town sights — a rickshaw to the Chittori area and the archaeological site can be hired for about Rs 1,000.
  • Eating basics — simple Pakistani restaurants are scattered citywide. For barbecue at night, look along Station Road and Hyderabad Road.
