About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Miri, Sarawak’s second-largest city, sits on the northern coast of Borneo near the Brunei border. Known as Oil Town, it was the birthplace of the Malaysian petroleum industry in 1910 and remains a hub for Shell and Petronas. With a diverse population of Chinese, Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, Kelabit, and many other ethnic groups — plus a sizeable expatriate community — Miri has a noticeably cosmopolitan feel.

Beyond the oil economy, the city is the main gateway to some of Borneo’s most celebrated ecotourism destinations. Travelers often pass through en route to Gunung Mulu National Park or the Kelabit Highlands, but Miri itself rewards those who linger with nature hikes, waterfalls, and a surprisingly strong food scene.

Planning Tips

  • Bring passport copies to parks — You need your passport or a photocopy to enter Lambir Hills National Park (entry RM 20 for adults).
  • Carry more water than you think — The humidity is intense, especially on steep jungle trails. Tap water is not readily available inside parks.
  • Book Mulu and Bario flights early — MASWings connects Miri to Gunung Mulu and the Kelabit Highlands on small aircraft; seats fill fast, so reserve online ahead of your trip.
  • Observe Friday parking rules — City-centre parking is free from 11:45 AM to 2:15 PM on Fridays, after 5 PM daily, and on weekends. Use Miri City Council coupons (RM 0.50) at other times.
