About this place
Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, sits directly across the border from Calexico, California, blending Mexican and international influences into a modern desert city of over one million people. Known as "the city that captured the sun," it boasts one of Mexico's highest standards of living and a growing reputation for hospitality. The city's prosperous character is visible in upscale neighborhoods like San Pedro and Villafontana, while its historic La Chinesca district reflects a deep-rooted Chinese heritage that has shaped local culture and cuisine for over a century.
Beyond its industrial and agricultural roots, Mexicali surprises visitors with a vibrant cultural scene and access to diverse landscapes. The nearby Valley of the Giants showcases towering saguaro cacti, and the fishing town of San Felipe offers a coastal escape on the Sea of Cortez. Annual events like the massive Fiestas del Sol fair and the Baja Prog rock festival bring the community together, while local baseball and basketball games provide entertainment throughout the year.

Planning Tips
- Walking across the border — Parking on the US side costs US$4–9 per day. The walk into Mexico takes about five minutes; follow the signs and ignore taxi drivers unless you need a ride further into the city.
- Mexican auto insurance — If driving into Mexico, purchase Mexican insurance before your trip. It is legally required.
- Currency flexibility — While the Mexican peso is the official currency, US dollars are widely accepted throughout the city.
- Returning with alcohol — Visitors 21 and older can bring limited quantities back to the US (typically around 1 liter per adult). Mexican liquors like Tequila and Kahlua are particularly good bargains.
- Bottled water is a must — Stick to bottled or carbonated water rather than tap water to avoid stomach issues. Roadside taco stands should be approached with similar caution.
- Weekend timing for La Chinesca — The Asociación China de Mexicali is often locked during weekdays but usually open on weekend mornings.
- Know the emergency number — Dial 911 for all emergencies in Mexico. English-speaking operators are not guaranteed but are often available.
