About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Metro is a compact city in the southern Sumatran province of Lampung, positioned at the geographical heart of the province between Central and East Lampung. Its name is thought to derive from the Dutch word for "centre," a nod to its location, and is symbolized by the landmark Meterm Tower in Merdeka Park.

The city's character has been shaped by a history of migration. A 1936 Dutch colonial program brought Javanese settlers to the area, leading to a rich cultural blend where traditional Lampungese heritage now mingles with Javanese influences. Today, Metro serves as a convenient stopover along the Trans Sumatra Toll Road, offering visitors a taste of local life and a gateway to the surrounding region.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Entry and transit — without an airport or train station, plan to arrive via the Trans Sumatra Toll Road, exiting at the East Tegineneng toll gate, or by long-distance bus.
  • Local connectivity — 4G LTE mobile networks from providers like Smartfren, Telkomsel, and Indosat are generally reliable in the city, though coverage can be patchy with other carriers.
  • Pack for the tropics — light, breathable clothing is essential year-round; a light rain jacket is advisable even during the drier window.
  • Try the local snacks — look for specialty foods like keripik pisang (banana chips), kemplang crackers, seruit (grilled fish with chili paste), and pindang (boiled salted fish).
