About this place
Messina sits at the northeastern tip of Sicily, where the island nearly touches mainland Italy. Though many visitors see it only as a transit point for the short ferry hop from Villa San Giovanni or Reggio di Calabria, the city rewards those who linger with sweeping harbour views and a resilient character shaped by centuries of rebuilding. Its modern streetscape reflects the devastating 1908 earthquake and World War II bombing that erased most older structures, yet enough landmarks survive to fill a satisfying day of exploration.
Today Messina is a busy port city with a workaday feel rather than a polished resort atmosphere. Walkable clusters of sights radiate from the main harbour, and easy bus or tram connections reach the Capo Peloro area with its scenic lakes and coastal landscapes. The city also holds a quiet place in European history — in 1955 it hosted the conference that laid the groundwork for what would become the European Union.
