About this place
Meknes offers a refreshingly relaxed alternative to Morocco's more famous imperial cities. A vibrant modern hub with a remarkably authentic 17th-century imperial old town, it was shaped by the ambitious King Moulay Ismaïl and still feels delightfully overlooked by mass tourism. Visitors often comment on the genuine welcome here – hassles are rare and prices remain refreshingly reasonable.
Straddling a dry riverbed, the city splits neatly between the walkable Ville Nouvelle (Hamrya) for nightlife and dining, and the ancient medina packed with monuments, souks, and traditional crafts. Its position in the Middle Atlas also makes Meknes a handy launchpad for the remarkable Roman ruins of Volubilis.

- Late April to early July – this is the sweet spot: warm, sunny days averaging 21.2°C, minimal rainfall (0.7 mm), and low cloud cover before the peak summer heat.
- Avoid the midsummer furnace – late July and August can push temperatures uncomfortably toward 43°C, making medina exploration exhausting.
- Winter sees cooler, wetter weather – daytime temperatures remain mild, but lows can drop to 3.9°C and rain is more frequent; still workable for sightseeing with layers and a jacket.

- Use petit taxis for short hops – ubiquitous blue Fiats and Peugeots zip around the city; fares start at 5 dirham, but expect a 50% surcharge after 20:00.
- Bargain respectfully in the medina – offering half the initial price and negotiating from there is standard custom; walking away often brings the price down significantly.
- Choose your train station wisely – the smaller central station drops you closer to the medina and Ville Nouvelle, saving a longer trek from the main Gare de Meknes.
