About this place
Mekele is the capital of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, perched in the Tigrayan Highlands at an elevation that brings a temperate climate. With roughly 200,000 residents, it feels like a bustling regional hub rather than an overwhelming metropolis, and its tree-lined streets make walking a genuine pleasure. The city serves as an excellent base for exploring Tigray’s extraordinary rock-hewn churches, which pepper the dramatic high-desert landscape to the north.
Travellers often use Mekele or nearby smaller towns such as Wukro and Hawzien as a launchpad for church excursions, which range from accessible visits to challenging, vertigo-inducing climbs. The city itself offers a relaxed mix of local flavour and practical comforts, including a growing number of restaurants catering to different tastes.

Things to Do
- Explore the rock-hewn churches of Tigray — use Mekele, Wukro, or Hawzien as a base to discover these remarkable structures carved into the high-desert cliffs. The churches are as rewarding as they are adventurous to reach.
- Walk Mekele’s tree-lined streets — the city is compact and pleasant for foot exploration, giving you a first-hand look at daily life in a lively Ethiopian regional capital.
- Hike to Chele Anka Waterfall — located about 8 km southwest of town, this waterfall becomes particularly impressive during and just after the rainy season, with a scenic hike to reach it.
- Join local music and dancing at Geza Gerelassie — this eating, drinking, and dancing venue features live Ethiopian music (often at weekends), where everyone gets up and joins in alongside great beef dishes like shekla tibs.

Planning Tips
- Book bus tickets in advance — for long-distance routes (e.g. from Addis Ababa), purchase your tickets a few days beforehand, especially with companies like Selam bus.
- Know your bus stations — buses from the north (e.g. Axum) arrive at the northern station about 4 km out of town, while departures south leave from the central bus station.
- Pack for cool evenings — even during warm months, overnight lows drop to around 11.1°C, so bring a light jacket or fleece.
- Arrange church guides in Wukro — the tourist office in Wukro can help set up guides and transport for visiting the rock-hewn churches, making logistics much smoother.
