About this place
Medan is a large, bustling city on the north coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and the capital of North Sumatra province. With a population of about 2 million, it is the largest Indonesian city outside of Java. The city's most defining feature is its incredible ethnic diversity — including Javanese, Batak, Chinese, Minangkabau, Malay, Acehnese, and Indian communities — which has turned Medan into a true culinary destination. Visitors can sample a vast array of regional cuisines, from Batak grilled pork to spicy Padang dishes, savory Chinese noodles, and aromatic Indian curies, often available around the clock.
Medan also offers a distinct contrast of old and new. Dutch colonial-era landmarks, including Art Deco buildings and green parks, sit alongside modern malls and tightly packed shophouses. While Medan sees fewer Western tourists than Jakarta or Denpasar, it provides an authentic, if chaotic, glimpse into a large Indonesian city. For many travelers, it's a convenient gateway to other popular Sumatran destinations such as the highland getaway of Berastagi and the magnificent crater lake, Lake Toba. It is also used as a stepping stone to Penang, Malaysia.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-January to mid-March (Window 1) — This period offers the best balance of lower rainfall (around 5 mm per day), comfortable temperatures, and fewer rainy days. It is the most pleasant time for exploring the city.
- Mid-July to early August (Window 2) — A secondary window with similar comfort levels, though rainfall and cloud cover are slightly higher.
- Avoid October–December — These months see the heaviest rainfall, which can disrupt outdoor plans and make traffic even more frustrating.

Planning Tips
- Get a local SIM card — SIM cards with data are very affordable and easy to obtain. Free Wi-Fi is also offered in most cafes and restaurants.
- Use ride-hailing apps — For reliable transport, book cars or bikes through Grab or Gojek. They offer fixed fares and no bargaining, but consult your driver on pick-up points to avoid conflicts.
- Avoid unofficial taxis — Stick to the Bluebird or Express taxi companies, and always insist on using the meter.
- Bargain for becaks — Agree on the price before getting in, and consider taking a photo of the driver's license card as a precaution against scams.
- Carry small denominations — Having small bills (especially Rp5,000 and Rp10,000) makes paying for minibuses and street food much easier.
- Check visa requirements — Medan's airport and seaport are visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry points. Check the latest Indonesia visa rules before traveling.
