About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Mazar-e Sharif is the capital of Balkh Province and the fourth-largest city in Afghanistan, with a population over 485,000. It was founded in the 12th century around the shrine of Ali bin Talib, the Prophet's cousin, and the city grew around the magnificent Blue Mosque that marks the site.

Historically part of the ancient region of Bactria, Mazar took over from nearby Balkh as the regional capital in the 19th century. Its position at a crossroads of trade has made it one of Afghanistan's most ethnically diverse and open cities, second only to Kabul in its liberal character.

  • Visit the Blue Mosque for daily prayers — the shrine is open to worshippers and visitors, offering a powerful sense of the city's spiritual core.
  • Explore the bazaar for hand-woven carpets — browse Turkoman rugs and coarser, more affordable Afghan rugs in the local market.
  • Sample fresh fruit slushies and shakes — try banana shakes with almonds and dates, or persimmon versions, from stands near the shrine and Aamo Hotel.
  • Pick up street food near the Farhat Hotel — stalls lining both sides of the road serve bagels stuffed with greens, tomato, and french fries alongside fruit shakes and tea.

  • April through mid-June — the most comfortable season, with mild average temperatures around 24.2°C, plentiful sunshine, and almost no rain or snow.
  • Late spring (May) — as temperatures climb toward the high end of the range, days remain bright and cloud cover stays low, ideal for exploring on foot.
  • Avoid peak summer — highs reaching 42.8°C in the warmer months can make outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable in the desert climate.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Road travel from Kabul — the Salang Pass route can take 5–12 hours; Mercedes buses leave around 04:00–05:00 and arrive by mid-afternoon, while a night bus also runs.
  • Flights are limited — Kam Air flies to and from Kabul on Sundays and Thursdays; Ariana flights have been suspended due to low demand.
  • Getting around town — taxis are widely available and should be negotiated upfront; expect to pay 30 Afg or less for trips around the city center.
  • Internet access — the Dunya Internet Cafe on the first floor of Aamo Hotel (south side of the shrine) offers a reasonable connection.
  • Stay aware and flexible — conditions can shift quickly; keep a friendly, upbeat demeanor with police and remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Consult current travel advisories — safety information requires travelers to check official government guidance before planning a visit.
