About this place
Matsusaka sits in the heart of Mie Prefecture, long known as a merchant stop for pilgrims heading to the sacred shrine at Ise. Today it is best known for Matsusaka beef, considered among the finest wagyu in the country, and its centuries-old tradition of Matsusaka Momen indigo cloth. The compact city centre around the station makes it easy to explore on foot, while the surrounding hills offer gentle hiking and sweeping views.

Things to Do
- Hike Mt. Hossaka — The trail is beginner-friendly and not overly steep, and from the summit you can see as far as Nagoya on a clear day.
- Join the Ujisato Festival in November — Samurai march through the city streets and gather at the castle ruins to honour Matsusaka’s former lord.
- Sample Matsusaka beef — Try an affordable bento box from a station kiosk, or book a multi-course meal at a specialist restaurant for the full experience.
- Shop for Matsusaka Momen — Pick up wallets, bags, or handkerchiefs made from the city’s signature indigo cloth at the station souvenir store.
- Check the local nightlife — The bars near the station draw a friendly, mixed crowd, from punk-themed izakaya to cosy jazz joints.

Things to See
- Matsusaka Castle ruins — The steep, unguarded walls make this a scenic daytime stop; avoid visiting after dark unless an event is on.
- Matsusaka Rockers Club — A rowdy live house where local punk and metal bands play to a mix of bikers, punks, and office workers unwinding.
- Iinan village area — Buses from the station reach Bell Farm and the surrounding countryside, a quieter contrast to the city centre.
- Station souvenir store — Right beside the JR entrance, it sells local snacks, sauces, crafts, and even tea grown in Iinan village.
