About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Mataram is the largest city and provincial capital of West Nusa Tenggara on the island of Lombok. With over 400,000 residents, it functions as an agglomeration of several former villages, primarily Ampenan on the west coast, central Mataram, and the commercial hub of Cakranegara to the east. While many travelers pass through en route to Lombok’s beaches and the Gili Islands, the city serves as a practical base for local transport, shopping, and glimpsing everyday urban life on the island.

  • Late May to early October — This period sees the most reliable dry-season weather, with warm, sunny days and very little rain ideal for arriving and moving around the region.
  • Avoid peak Indonesian holidays — Prices for car rentals and demand on transport services rise sharply during local and national holiday periods.
  • June through August — Although within the dry window, these months also overlap with peak tourism season, which can mean higher rental rates and busier services.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Pre-book airport transfers — Shuttle services like DAMRI and Perama run from the airport and Lembar port, but schedules can be unreliable; book ahead and allow plenty of time for flights.
  • Use metered taxis — Bluebird and Express taxis are widely available; insist on the meter or call radio dispatch to avoid negotiating fares.
  • Car and motorbike rentals — Expect to pay around Rp250,000–450,000 per day for a car and about Rp50,000 for a motorbike; always wear a helmet when riding.
  • Watch your valuables on bemos — If using local minibuses, stay alert to pickpockets, especially on busy Cakranegara routes.
