About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Matadi is a major port city of about 300,000 people in western Democratic Republic of the Congo, perched on the banks of the Congo River. It is the country's chief sea port and the capital of the Bas-Congo province. The city occupies a strategic position as the last navigable port before the impassable Livingstone Falls, serving as a vital gateway for trade in and out of the DRC.

Founded in 1879 by Sir Henry Morton Stanley, Matadi’s identity is linked to its industrial river setting and its role as the largest port in the country. For travelers, it also provides a key crossing point over the Congo River and a connection to nearby border regions.

  • May to early August — the prime travel window, offering the best balance of seasonality and comfort. Expect dry conditions, average temperatures around 23.6°C, and plenty of sunshine.
  • Dry season months — focusing on the low-rainfall period increases the reliability of road and rail travel given the region's potentially rough terrain.
  • Shoulder weeks for rail travel — coordinating with the 1-2 weekly train departures from Kinshasa can make for a smoother, more comfortable journey.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Check train schedules — the rail service from Kinshasa is a recommended option, with semi-modern trains and a relatively fast 7-hour trip; departures are limited to 1-2 times per week.
  • Use a 4x4 for road trips — while the N1 road has many paved sections, rough spots make a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle essential; ask locally about current conditions before setting out.
  • Plan for basics — accommodation and dining options appear limited; confirmed options include Hotel Vivi Palace, Hotel Formoza Matadi, and Auberge de la Paix, but confirming availability ahead of time is wise.
  • Consider the Angolan border — overland travel from northern Angola is possible but challenging due to poor road conditions over the roughly 120-km distance to M'banza-Kongo.
  • Charter flights only — Matadi Tshimpi Airport is small and unpaved, suitable only for chartered small aircraft and not commercial airlines.
