About this place
Maroua is the bustling capital of Cameroon's Far North Region, home to just over a million people. The city is shaped by its deep artisanal traditions — tanners, potters, weavers, tailors, and blacksmiths gather daily in and around the central market, making Maroua one of the country’s most distinctive craft destinations.
Beyond the market, the area is known for its imposing ginger fields and the local production of ginger liqueur. The craft center near the market entrance brings together about fifty artisans offering hand-woven textiles, leather goods, and exotic-skin accessories, while a more modern craft center sits at the city entrance.

Things to Do

- Visit the modern craft center at the city entrance — another cluster of workshops offering a slightly different selection of local handicrafts and souvenirs.
- Tour the ginger fields — the countryside around Maroua is known for large-scale ginger cultivation, and the crop plays a central role in the local economy and cuisine.
- Sample Maroua ginger liqueur — produced locally, this specialty drink is one of the city’s signature products and worth tasting.
- Catch an event at the Maroua Sports Complex — the city’s main sports venue hosts local competitions and gatherings.

Best Time to Visit

Planning Tips
- Negotiate benskin fares upfront — a shared ride within the city runs 100–300 FCFA, while a “déposer” (private motorbike taxi) starts at 500 FCFA; agree on the price before getting on.
- Consider hiring a car — renting a vehicle at the airport or in town is a more secure and comfortable way to navigate Maroua and the surrounding region.
- Budget extra travel time — the poor condition of the N1 Highway means road journeys from Garoua, Kousseri, or Maiduguri can take twice as long as maps suggest.
- Bring cash in FCFA — the artisan workshops and local transport largely operate on cash; small denominations are helpful for market purchases and benskin rides.
