About this place
Marawi is a Muslim-majority city on the shore of Lake Lanao in Lanao del Sur. It is known as a cultural heartland of the Maranao people, with traditional architecture and a deeply rooted Islamic identity shaping daily life.
The city experienced devastating conflict in 2017, when insurgents took control and months of fighting caused extensive damage, particularly in the city center. Rebuilding efforts were still underway as of early 2022, and visitors should expect a destination in transition.
