About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Maputo, Mozambique's capital since 1898, is a vibrant port city resting at the mouth of the Santo River in the country's far south, just 90 km from the South African border. As the nation's largest city and most important harbor, it offers a concentrated urban experience of wide, tree-lined avenues that feels more intimate than many other sub-Saharan African capitals.

The city hums with a healthy, active street life—locals fill the sidewalks, markets, and cafés, while the relative scarcity of tourists lends the atmosphere a distinctly South American flavor. Gardens bursting with bougainvillea, jacaranda, and flamboyant trees soften the skyline of aging concrete and colonial-era buildings, creating a pleasing, if slightly shabby, charm. Accommodation spans everything from luxury hotels to backpacker hostels, making the city accessible to a range of travelers.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Stroll along Avenida Julius Nyerere, starting from the Natural History Museum or Hotel Cardoso and heading north to the Polana Hotel. The route is lined with boutiques, restaurants, and curio vendors in the upscale Polana neighborhood.
  • Take in a local wedding to experience beautiful tribal singing and the sound of women ululating. Civil ceremonies are held next door to the Avenida Hotel, particularly on Saturday mornings.
  • Visit nearby beaches such as Catembe or Ponta d'Ouro for a jovial atmosphere. Ponta d'Ouro and Ponta Malongane also offer excellent scuba-diving spots with campsites and chalets right on the sand.
  • Cycle from Maputo to Ponta do Ouro on a mountain bike for a true adventure. Be prepared to push your bike through roughly 30 km of thick sand, and consider traveling in a group for safety.
  • Catch live music at the Central Train Station, which transforms into a jazz lounge on Friday and Saturday nights within its grand, imposing architecture.

  • Maputo Railway Station on Praça dos Trabalhadores is an imposing architectural landmark, often mistakenly attributed to Gustave Eiffel. It's particularly vibrant on weekend nights when it hosts live music.
  • Parque dos Continuadores (FEIMA) at the corner of Av. Julius Nyerere and Av. Mao Tse-Tung is the go-to spot for handcrafted souvenirs, including wood carvings, batik cloth, and colorful African fabrics.

  • Search for the Pancho Guedes creations—surreal, Gaudí-esque buildings that are as charming as they are difficult to find, adding a unique architectural layer to the city's character.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Use ride-hailing apps: Yango is a popular and reliable app for ordering taxis, moto-taxis, or tuk-tuks. For metered taxis, agree on a fare before starting your trip.
  • Carry certified passport copies: Police may demand to see your documents. Have a notarized copy of your passport and visa with you instead of the originals. Mozambican notaries can be found on Av. Lenine, near the park.
  • Stick to bottled water and be food-aware: Avoid tap water and be cautious with roadside meat stalls. Stick to hard-peeled fruits you can wash yourself, or popular safe street snacks like cashews and fried bean cakes (bhajia).
  • Pay with cash at restaurants: To avoid the risk of card cloning, do not let your credit or debit card out of your sight and prefer cash payments when dining out.
  • Plan border crossings strategically: If driving from South Africa, ensure you have current vehicle registration papers and can purchase third-party insurance at the border. Be prepared for unofficial 'helpers' and stay firm if you don't want their services.
  • Explore beyond the city center by tuk-tuk: Tuk-tuk drivers often speak better English and double as informal tour guides, making them a fun way to see more of Maputo.
