About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Maoming is a young, prefecture-level city in the coastal province of Guangdong, built on the fortunes of its petrochemical industry. It also administers the neighboring county-level cities of Xinyi, Gaozhou, and Huazhou, serving as a regional hub. The city’s name honors Pan Maoming, an ancient Taoist priest, and its history is tied to the discovery of oil shale in the 1950s, which transformed it from a rural area into a modern industrial center.

Today, Maoming blends industrial heritage with cultural landmarks. Local pride centers on Madam Xian, a celebrated female leader of the Li people who fostered unity between the Li and Han communities and brought Hainan Island under Chinese rule. Her legacy lives on in temples dedicated to her, and her famous words, “I served the masters of three dynasties with only a good heart,” remain a touchstone of local identity.

  • Maoming does not have its own airport; fly into Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport and take a direct bus, or fly to Guangzhou and continue by train or bus.
  • The main city-center station is Maoming Railway Station, offering both high-speed and conventional trains; the older Maomingwest Railway Station serves only low-speed routes.
  • When riding local buses, press the bell in advance to request your stop, as drivers may not stop otherwise.
  • Pack light clothing for warm daytime weather but bring a layer for cooler evenings if traveling in late autumn.
