About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Manisa is a modern industrial city in Turkey's Central Aegean region, set on the slopes of Mount Sipylus about 65 km northeast of Izmir. Its history stretches from Hittite times through Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule, and the city still holds several restored mosques and ancient fragments that hint at that long past. After near-total destruction in the early 20th century, Manisa rebuilt itself and today functions as a bustling provincial center with a population of roughly 1.5 million across the province.

The compact old town sits at the base of the mountain, with most sights within walking distance. Manisa makes a practical stop between Istanbul and Izmir, and its hilltop national park offers a quick escape into forests, wild tulips, and views over the plains below.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Getting there — Fly into Izmir and take a 35-minute bus or dolmuş, or arrive by train from Izmir, Ankara, or Bandırma (connecting from Istanbul ferries).
  • Getting around — The old town is walkable; for the intercity bus station 2 km north, use one of the dozen town bus lines marked as Yeni Garaj or Terminal.
  • Check attraction status — Several key sites like the Archaeological Museum and Ulu Cami have been closed for restoration; verify current opening before planning.
  • Bring layers for the mountain — Even in warm months, the summit of Mount Sipylus can be cooler and windy, and winter brings snow.
