About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Central Park is a sprawling green oasis in the heart of Manhattan, stretching 2.5 miles from Midtown to Harlem. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and completed in 1873, its naturalistic landscape of quiet woods, calm lakes, and open meadows provides a welcome escape from the surrounding skyscrapers. The park’s iconic status has been cemented by countless film and television appearances, and it has been on UNESCO’s tentative list since 2017 for its landscape and design.

The park is divided into distinct sections that each offer a different character, from the bustling South End near Midtown to the more tranquil North End. You'll find sunbathers and picnickers on the lush lawns, joggers and cyclists on the winding drives, and a rich array of cultural touchstones, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art located along its eastern edge.
