About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Mandalay is a city of contrasts—a relatively young capital created by royal decree in 1857 yet deeply woven into the cultural and religious fabric of Myanmar. Centered on the rebuilt Royal Palace and shaded by Mandalay Hill, it remains the economic heart of Upper Myanmar and a hub where Bamar, Chinese, Shan, and Indian communities intersect. Wide, numbered streets laid out during the British era give the center a grid-like order, while bicycles and motorcycles fill the avenues with constant motion.

Beyond the city proper, the landscape opens onto a cluster of "ancient capitals"—Amarapura, Sagaing, Innwa, and Mingun—each reachable on a day trip. Visitors often come to see the long teak spans of U Bein Bridge, the white tiers of Hsinbyume Pagoda, and monasteries that house a large share of the country's monks. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake in March 2025 caused significant damage to landmarks including the Ava Bridge, parts of the Royal Palace, and several historic pagodas, so some sites are in active recovery.

Mandalay rewards travelers who enjoy self-guided exploration, whether by bicycle along flat, navigable roads or by joining locally arranged tours. The city's regional cuisine draws on Shan, Chinese, and Burmese traditions, and its markets hum with trade from China and India. While the capital functions moved to Naypyidaw, Mandalay's commercial energy and centuries-old spiritual pull remain unmistakable.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Cycle Mandalay's flat grid of streets at your own pace—many sights cluster around Mandalay Hill, and rental bicycles provide an affordable way to reach distant points like the Mahamuni Image, Innwa, and U Bein Bridge.
  • Join the classic full-day tour of the three former capitals: explore the monastic rhythms of Amarapura, climb the viewpoints of Sagaing Hill, and wander the lanes of Innwa by horse cart or on foot before sunset at U Bein Bridge.
  • Take the morning ferry to Mingun (departing at 09:30, returning at 13:30) to photograph the luminous Hsinbyume Pagoda and see the enormous Mingun Bell.
  • Sketch a do-it-yourself bicycle loop from the Clock Tower south to U Bein Bridge, continuing to Innwa's scattered monuments and returning in time for sunset on the bridge.
  • Browse textile workshops around Amarapura, where cottage looms—from single hand-operated machines to larger setups—operate inside family homes, and visitors are typically welcomed.

Things to See

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Mandalay Hill: a climb or short ride rewards with panoramas across the city and the Irrawaddy plain; access requires an additional entry fee.
  • Royal Palace: the original was destroyed during World War II and the 2025 earthquake caused further damage to the reconstruction, but the walled compound remains the symbolic center of Mandalay.
  • Mahamuni Image: one of Myanmar's most venerated Buddha figures, housed in a temple complex south of the city center.
  • U Bein Bridge at Amarapura: a remarkably long teak footbridge best visited at daybreak or sunset, when the lake reflects the silhouette of monks and locals crossing.
  • Sagaing Hill: a short drive or ride west of the Ayeyarwady, topped with pagodas that offer sweeping river views.
  • Innwa (Ava): reachable by a brief ferry crossing, the former island capital rewards exploration by foot or horse cart, with highlights like the Maha Aung Mye Bonzan monastery.
  • Mingun's Hsinbyume Pagoda and Mingun Bell: a striking white-washed pagoda and one of the world's largest bronze bells, across the river from Mandalay.

  • January through March offers a comfortable window: warm average temperatures around 24.7°C, very low rainfall, low cloud cover (around 15%%), and abundant daily sunshine.
  • The broad dry season from November to February is the most pleasant for walking, cycling, and temple-hopping, with cooler mornings and mild afternoons.
  • Consider visiting during November or early December to see the city after the monsoon vegetation is lush and before peak tourist arrivals intensify.
  • Avoid April and May if intense heat is a concern—temperatures can climb well above 35°C and outdoor comfort drops significantly.
  • Plan day trips to Amarapura and U Bein Bridge on weekdays when possible, as local visitor traffic increases on weekends and around festivals.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Purchase the Mandalay Zone Fee (10,000 kyat) at the first major attraction you visit; it covers most central sites for about a week but does not include Mandalay Hill, Mingun, or Sagaing.
  • Prepare small bills in kyat for entry fees, ferry crossings (e.g., Mingun return ferry is 5,000 kyat per person), and trishaw or pickup rides.
  • For the Mingun day trip, note that the public ferry departs Mandalay at 09:30 and returns at 13:30—there is no later public boat, so don't miss the return.
  • When hiring a moto-taxi for a full day, negotiate a price around 10,000 kyat before departing, and confirm whether sunset at U Bein Bridge is included.
  • Fill out your arrival card on the plane to save time at immigration if you're flying into Mandalay International Airport.
  • Carry a phone photo or written note of your destinations in Burmese script—most drivers and locals will assist more easily, and it reduces navigation stress on self-guided bicycle rides.
  • Check the latest status of major sights before visiting, as the March 2025 earthquake and ongoing infrastructure work may alter access to the Royal Palace, Ava Bridge, and certain pagodas.
